Why Sometimes Painting Exterior Brick is a Good Idea

Painting exterior brick can give a house a much-needed facelift and add curb appeal like its never had before. Ok, yes I know that some people think that painting brick is akin to committing a sin. They believe that brick has an aesthetic value that no other kind of siding can give you and therefore should never under any circumstances be covered over with paint or anything else for that matter.

Well alright I’ll agree that brick does have a charm and look that you can’t get from other types of siding but I do feel there are reasons for painting exterior brick which brings me to the question, Why would you want to paint exterior brick? Its a fair question. It’s one of the least expensive ways to dramatically change the look of your house at a fraction of the cost of other methods of remodeling. Let’s take a look at why painting exterior bricks are sometimes a necessary or desirable thing to do.

Sometimes bricks just fade over time due to the weather. The sun beating down on the bricks for decades just makes it lose the look that it had when the house was built. Moisture. In climates where the weather gets brutally cold moisture can get into the brick and freeze and crack the mortar and damage the appearance of the brick. So the debate rages on. I’m sorry but step back and take a look. Is it an eyesore when you look at it from the street? Does it have stains on it or cracking mortar joints? If so then I think one should paint the bricks.

Before you start painting exterior bricks there are some steps to take to ensure that it not only looks good when you are finished, you want to be sure that it lasts a long time too so let’s start from the first things you should do. The first thing to do is to check the weather. A rain shower can ruin a paint job in a hurry!
